This story was very much an emotional ride. Alex was a little selfish, but I completely understood where he was coming from. I was sent away to a foster home once and it was not nearly as good as where Alex was sent, but the idea of not knowing where you will be, and not being permanent, is very scary. I lied just so I could return to my old home. It was not a good life, but I knew it and understood it. The rules were clear to me. So I can completely relate to Alex’s point of view.
I can also relate to Sebastian. As I don’t speak, there were many times I was written off as a retard. I think Sebastian really brings out the good in Alex. The pair of them were great together, and the romance was sweet. I really loved them together. The ending was so good. I do hope these boys have more story to tell, because I would love to read more.
Two things I would have liked to see are: What happened with Alex’s mom? And what happened with his sister? There was a little about the sister, but I would have liked a little more.
I believe this book falls into the “hope” category for me and, along with the great story and writing, I give the book 5 Marbles ~Timmy

in ebook and paperback from Amazon,
Alex’s life as a teenager in South Central L.A. is far from perfect, but it’s his life, and he knows how to live it. He knows what role to play and what things to keep to himself. He’s got it all under control, until one lousy pair of shoes kicks him out of his world and lands him in a foster care group home.
Surrounded by strangers and trapped in a life where he could never belong, Alex turns to the only person lower on the social ladder than he is: a “special” mute boy. In Sebastian, Alex finds a safe place to store his secrets—those that sent him to foster care, and the deeper one that sets him apart from the other teenagers he knows. But Sebastian has secrets of his own, and when tragedy rips the two boys apart, Alex will stop at nothing to find the answers—even if it means dragging them both through a past full of wounds best left buried.
It might just be worth it, for the slim chance at love.
This has been in my TBR stack for a long time. I really need to pull it out and read it. It sounds like a very emotional story. Thanks for a review that points me in the direction to get it read.

Oh I read this one and really liked it. I had trouble understanding Alex and his thoughts, but I think if I re read this one I would be more understanding to him now. Great review Timmy, in fact I think I might just have to re read this soon <3
ReplyDeleteAlex was really well written, if you ask me. Sometimes we kids are not always easy to understand.

I got this book a few weeks ago because of a Cody post and just started reading it night before last. I get Alex for so many reasons. I get his anger and need to return to his life no matter how bad. It is as you said, you at least know what to expect there. I have not gotten fare in the book yet but it looks like I'm in for a very good read. You don't often give 5 Marbles so I'm glad I got it. Thank you Timmy
ReplyDeleteYes! I'm glad you get Alex. He is an interesting character. Let me know your finial thoughts.

This book looks so intense regarding fitting in and acceptance that I hesitated considering to read it. After reading your review I am putting it on my TBR list. Five marbles works for me.

ReplyDeleteAlex was fantastic, he had so much heart and drive, so much will to change things. He turned to what he knew, to help.
Seb and Alex together were so cute, and I simply love how they brought the best out of each other.
Great book, thanks for the tip!
Excellent review!
