Timmy's Review of One Man Guy by Michael Barakiva

Just two words to explain this book. Awesome read! OMG, I loved reading this. It doesn’t always work in real life, but there are people who have come out and not had their whole lives turned upside down. This was such a sweet romance, but it was so much more too.

I am ashamed to say I had never heard of the Armenian Genocide. Something so important to Armenian history should be as well known as the Holocaust and important to those who lost loved ones and ancestors. I would like to thank the author for writing about this. I will be doing much research in the near future. History is often so sad, yet is essential to understanding where we come from and how far we have come.

There were things that didn’t work for me in this book, and things that did. It was annoying that Alek was always referring to his home and family in third person (in the form of surnames). ("His dad found the keys on the Khederian's counter" refers to his own kitchen counter). While this may have been intended as a writing style of sorts, it became a distraction and detracted from the book. But I loved the characters. Every single character in this book was awesome in his or her own way.

I give this book 4 Marbles. Great book for ages 12 and up.~Timmy

About One Man Guy

Alek Khederian should have guessed something was wrong when his parents took him to a restaurant. Everyone knows that Armenians never eat out. Why bother, when their home cooking is far superior to anything "these Americans" could come up with? Between bouts of interrogating the waitress and criticizing the menu, Alek’s parents announce that he’ll be attending summer school in order to bring up his grades. Alek is sure this experience will be the perfect hellish end to his hellish freshmen year of high school. He never could’ve predicted that he’d meet someone like Ethan.

Ethan is everything Alek wishes he were: confident, free-spirited, and irreverent. When Ethan gets Alek to cut school and go to a Rufus Wainwright concert in New York City’s Central Park, Alek embarks on his first adventure outside the confines of his suburban New Jersey existence. He can’t believe a guy this cool wants to be his friend. And before long, it seems like Ethan wants to be more than friends. Alek has never thought about having a boyfriend—he’s barely ever had a girlfriend—but maybe it’s time to think again.

Michael Barakiva's One Man Guy is a romantic, moving, laugh-out-loud-funny story about what happens when one person cracks open your world and helps you see everything—and, most of all, yourself--like you never have before.

    1. I love a book that has me so hooked that I feel the need to research after I have read. A sign of a great book, is when I wait until after I have finished reading to do the research.
